Absence

  1. A note or phone call from parent/guardian is required within a 48-hour period for an absence to be excused each day of the absence. Students without open campus privileges are not allowed to leave campus at any time without prior parental notification; they are not allowed to leave campus with another student during lunches (even with parent approval)
  2. Any absence that has not been accounted for within 48 hours will count as an unexcused absence on the student’s record of attendance and must be excused through an administrator.
  3. Any student leaving for an appointment must turn in a note before school begins and get a pass to leave class.
  4. Please note: Students will be marked absent after arriving 15 or more minutes late.

Excused Absence Policy

  • The following are considered excused absences:
  • A student who is temporarily ill or injured;
  • A student who is absent for an extended period due to physical, mental, or emotional disability; (Doctors Notes will be required after 10 EXC absences within one class period)
  • A student whose absence is approved by the building principal or designee at the request of the parent or guardian;
  • A student who is absent due to bereavement;
  • A student who is absent due to immediate family member illness and medical appointments;
  • A student who is absent due to court appearances;
  • A student who is absent in observance of an established religious holiday;
  • A student who is pursuing a work-study program under the supervision of the school;
  • A student who is attending any school-sponsored activity or activities of an educational nature with advanced approval by the principal or designee.

If the reason for the absence is not listed above, students must fill out an Advanced notification form and get it approved by an Administrator for it to be excused. Family trips, vacation and Non LHS sports and activities require this form to be completed and submitted prior to the absence.

Please note: A student may NOT be EXCUSED from one class to work on homework/work for another class. Also, a student may not be excused from class, one or more periods, and remain on campus. When on campus, students are expected to be in assigned classes.

Unexcused Absences

Unexcused absences are those with or without prior knowledge and approval of the parents but for reasons not acceptable to the principal.

Students are expected to complete their community service hours outside of instructional time.

Tardy

Please call the attendance line before 9:00 am if your student will be late.

Early Dismissal

**Students are required to pick up their passes in the main office; passes will not be delivered**

  • Please call the attendance line before 9:00 am if your student needs to leave school for an appointment. Students must pick up their passes before class or during passing period.
  • The student must sign out with attendance before they leave campus, as well as sign back in upon return.
  • If your student becomes ILL during the day, they need to report to the health room located in the main office for an early dismissal.
  • In the case of an emergency and you need your student in under an hour, please call the main line 303-387-4500.
  • Please be aware that we are unable to call a student out of class after 2:45 if the early dismissal was not arranged in advance.

 

Extended Absence

If a student must be away from school for one or more days or for reasons other than sickness, injury or approved school activities, an Advanced Notification for Absence form is necessary.

  • Signed first by the student's parents
  • Signed second by the student's teachers
  • Finally evaluated by the appropriate school administrators.


DCSD Board Policy-Excused Absence

Excused absences are those resulting from: temporary or extended illness, injury or physical, mental, or emotional disability; family emergencies; absences excused by the principal through prior requests of parents or guardians; absences approved by the superintendent or designee due to inclement weather; absences pursuant to school release permits under District policy JHD; absences which occur when a student is in the custody of a court or law enforcement authority; absences due to suspension or expulsion; and any other absence approved by the principal.  If a student is in an out-of-home placement as defined by C.R.S. 22-32-138(1)(e), absences due to court appearances and participation in court-ordered activities shall be excused.

Outside Agencies

Complaints regarding violations of Title VI, (race, national origin), Title IX (sex, gender), Section 504/ADA (handicap or disability), may be filed directly with the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education, 1244 North Speer Blvd., Suite 310, Denver, CO 80204. Complaints regarding violations of Title VII (employment) and the ADEA (prohibiting age discrimination in employment) may be filed directly with the Federal Office of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 303 E. 17th Ave., Suite 510, Denver, CO 80202, or the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, 1560 Broadway, Suite 1050, Denver, CO 80202.
